The transformation of Europe’s premier tourist destination reached a definitive milestone this week as Disneyland Paris officially inaugurated its reimagined second gate, Disney Adventure World.

This launch marks the culmination of years of intensive development and a strategic shift in the resort’s operational identity, moving from a studio-focused concept to one defined by immersive, large-scale storytelling. The transition was marked by a series of high-profile events, including a state visit from the French President and a star-studded gala, signalling the park’s importance to both the global Disney portfolio and the French national economy.

Strategic economic impact and presidential validation

On 27 March, two days prior to the public unveiling, French President Emmanuel Macron conducted a formal site visit to the Chessy-based resort. This visit underscored the destination’s significant economic weight, with 445 million visits since its opening in 1992. According to a new contribution study conducted by SETEC, the resort in 2026 now accounts for 6.1% of France’s national tourism revenue, solidifying its status as a critical driver of the country’s service sector.

Accompanying the President were Josh D’Amaro, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, and Apóstolos Tzitzikóstas, the European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism. The delegation was led on a tour of the expansion site by Natacha Rafalski, Présidente of Disneyland Paris, who highlighted the technical expertise of the Walt Disney Imagineering teams and the 400 suppliers who contributed to the project.

The scale of the expansion is underpinned by a €2 billion investment plan first announced in 2018. This capital expenditure has enabled Disney Adventure World to roughly double its footprint, incorporating entirely new themed lands and infrastructure. Josh D’Amaro noted that the inauguration of the World of Frozen land is a key component of this growth, designed to increase park capacity and drive meaningful economic impact through the creation of 1,000 new direct jobs.

A new creative identity

The decision to rename the park from Walt Disney Studios Park to Disney Adventure World reflects a fundamental change in the guest experience. The original 2002 park, which was heavily criticised by some guests for its overly compact size and a lack of rides, focused on the “behind-the-scenes” aspects of cinema, whereas the new iteration is designed to place visitors directly inside the narratives of Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar, and Marvel Studios.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Natacha Rafalski explained the vision behind the change: “With Disney Adventure World, we are not only unveiling a reimagined second gate at Disneyland Paris; we’re opening the door to a new era. An era where our guests walk straight into the heart of the stories they love”. This sentiment was echoed by Thomas Mazloum, Chairman of Disney Experiences, who stated that the reimagining reflects Disney’s “boundless imagination that brings people together”.

The creative overhaul is comprehensive, with more than 90% of the park’s offerings having been redesigned since the original gate opened in 2002. This includes the development of Adventure Way, a new promenade that guides guests toward the heart of the expansion.

Technical innovation

The centrepiece of the expansion is the World of Frozen, a detailed recreation of the Kingdom of Arendelle. Industry professionals will note the high level of technical sophistication employed in this new land, particularly regarding the attraction Frozen Ever After and the live entertainment offerings.

A highlight for visitors is the show A Celebration in Arendelle, which features an Olaf figure brought to life through next-generation robotic technology developed by Walt Disney Imagineering. This robotic iteration of the character demonstrates a level of fluid movement and expressive capability that represents a significant step forward in theme park animatronics.

The land is situated alongside Adventure Bay, a vast, majestic lake that serves as the park’s new central hub. This body of water is not merely aesthetic; it serves as the stage for Disney Cascade of Lights, the park’s first daily nighttime spectacular. The show combines a sophisticated array of drones, flames, water screens, and pyrotechnics to create an immersive environmental experience.

Gala Opening

On 28 March 2026, the resort hosted a formal inauguration gala presented by Visa. The event served as a demonstration of Disney’s multi-platform brand synergy, as the guest list included the core creative team behind the upcoming Frozen 3 film. Attendees included Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Chief Creative Officer Jared Bush, the writer and director of the Frozen films Jennifer Lee, and director Trent Correy. Returning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez were also present, highlighting the close link between the cinematic franchise and its physical manifestation in the park.

The ceremony featured a performance by French-American singer Santa, who performed “Into the Unknown” and “Let It Go” on a custom-designed ice piano. The artistic display was supported by appearances from characters such as Rapunzel and Flynn, who performed a piece dedicated to the new attraction Raiponce Tangled Spin.

The guest list also featured international figures from cinema, fashion, and sport, including Christian Louboutin, Isabelle Huppert, Léa Seydoux, Lucas Bravo, Camille Razat, and Hafsia Herzi. Other notable attendees included designers Sébastien Meyer and Arnaud Vaillant from Coperni, former Spice Girl Emma Bunton, and singer Louane. The sports world was represented by football legends Olivier Giroud, Wayne Rooney, and Andrés Iniesta, alongside Olympic champion Perrine Laffont. Leading digital creators Léna Mahfouf, Natoo, and Joyca also attended, ensuring the launch reached a broad demographic through social media channels.

Employment and regional infrastructure

Disneyland Paris remains a dominant force in the French labour market, employing more than 20,000 Cast Members across 500 different roles. The workforce is notably diverse, representing more than 120 nationalities. Highlighting its commitment to job security, the resort reported that 90% of its staff are on permanent contracts.

The expansion of Disney Adventure World has further strengthened the resort’s local roots. In 2024, more than 4,000 suppliers worked with the resort, 83% of whom were based in France. Specifically, 14% of these suppliers are located in Seine-et-Marne and 54% elsewhere in the Île-de-France region. International sourcing accounts for 17% of purchases, primarily from Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy.

This economic activity is a central pillar of the public-private partnership signed in 1987 between the French State and The Walt Disney Company. This partnership has transformed the Val d’Europe area, where the population has grown sevenfold to more than 54,000 inhabitants. The region now hosts more than 9,300 businesses, including major offices for firms such as Deloitte, Henkel, Orange, and Crédit Agricole Brie Picardie. Future development phases between 2025 and 2040 will include 6,000 new housing units and 112,000 square metres of office space.

Social responsibility and Make-A-Wish

The inauguration also served as a milestone for the resort’s philanthropic efforts. During the ceremony on 28 March, an 11-year-old girl named Lou joined Santa on stage to sing. Her visit, facilitated by Make-A-Wish France, marked the 25,000th wish fulfilled at Disneyland Paris since its opening in 1992.

Since its inception, the resort has welcomed more than 350,000 underprivileged children into its parks. These initiatives are supported by Disney VoluntEARS, a group of Cast Member volunteers who work with over 100 French and European charities.

On the public opening day of 29 March, children from Make-A-Wish and their families were given the honour of being the first to enter Disney Adventure World. They were welcomed by a guard of honour consisting of Disney characters and executives, including Natacha Rafalski and Tasia Filippatos, President and Managing Director of Disney Parks International.

Public opening and the guest experience

The official opening on 29 March was preceded by a surprise appearance by Spider-Man, who was perched atop the park’s iconic “Earffel Tower” to reveal the new Disney Adventure World signage to the waiting crowds.

Once the gates opened at 9:00 a.m., guests were able to explore the new attractions along Adventure Way. In addition to the World of Frozen, visitors experienced Raiponce Tangled Spin (Rapunzel’s Tangled Spin), a family attraction featuring sculpted gondolas based on the popular animated film. The expansion also introduced 15 new dining locations, significantly increasing the park’s food and beverage capacity.

The resort is positioning Disney Adventure World as a key component of its ambition to become a truly multi-day destination. Currently, 44% of guests originate from France, while 56% are international visitors, primarily from European markets. By offering two distinct park experiences—the classic storytelling of Disneyland Park and the immersive worlds of Disney Adventure World—the resort aims to encourage longer stays.

Future prospects for Disney Adventure World

The current expansion is only one phase of a broader master plan for the resort. Ongoing projects include the renovation of Disney Hotels, such as the major refurbishment of Disney Sequoia Lodge that began in January. Disney Village is also undergoing a multi-year transformation to modernise its dining and retail offerings.

Disney Sequoia Lodge Upgrades Paris

Looking ahead, several new developments have already been confirmed for Disney Adventure World. These include the first attraction inspired by the Disney and Pixar film Up, and a dedicated land based on The Lion King featuring a brand new water ride. These future additions, alongside the successfully launched World of Frozen, represent the next stage of Disneyland Paris’ nearly 34-year history of regional and economic impact.

As the resort enters this new era, the combination of technological innovation, high-profile branding, and strategic economic investment suggests a robust future for Disney Adventure World as a leader in the European attractions industry.
